Dangerous goods are items or substances that pose risks to health, safety, property, or the environment during air transport. These materials require special handling and restrictions to ensure safe travel. Proper awareness and compliance help protect everyone on board.
Dangerous goods include items that pose risks during air travel and are classified into the following categories:
❖ Explosives
❖ Gases
❖ Flammable liquids
❖ Flammable solids (substances prone to spontaneous combustion or that emit flammable gases when in contact with water)
❖ Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
❖ Toxic and infectious substances
❖ Radioactive materials
❖ Corrosive materials
❖ Magnetized materials
❖ Miscellaneous dangerous goods
Passengers must comply with regulations regarding the transport of these goods to ensure safety for all on board.
Federal law strictly prohibits carrying hazardous materials in your luggage aboard aircraft. Violating this law can lead to up to five years imprisonment and fines of $250,000 or more (49 U.S.C. 5124). Hazardous materials include explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizers, poisons, corrosive substances, and radioactive materials.
Examples include paints, lighter fluid, fireworks, tear gas, oxygen bottles, and radio-pharmaceuticals.
There are special exceptions for small quantities (up to 70 ounces total) of medicinal and toiletry articles in your luggage, as well as certain smoking materials carried on your person.
